Love it or hate it, packing is a required necessity at the start of all great travel adventures. As a well-stocked suitcase can bring you regular hits of joy throughout your trip, we’re embracing the task and finding ways to turn it into a labor of love. Here’s Waterside Shops checklist for vacation packing.
As if we needed any more incentive to go carry-on only: Louis Vuitton’s new Horizon 50 in glorious pillar-box red is light as a feather and endlessly luxurious. If checking luggage is unavoidable, head to TUMI, where a range of ultra-lightweight, beautifully designed, and extremely durable suitcases awaits: the striking 19 Degree line is a favorite. And be sure to pack the key ingredient to any great vacation: a straw bag, perfect for lazy city wandering and days at the beach. We love Rebecca Minkoff’s embroidered “Beach hair don’t care” bag, at Saks Fifth Avenue.
The ideal summer dress can be worn with flip flops during the day and heels at night. We love GAP’s drapey, Grecian-style dress in millennial pink, in a light jersey knit; and Calypso St. Barth’s playful, feminine cotton eyelet dress, with flower crochet details. For more caszh days, you will absolutely need a perfect pair of shorts: look no further than Chico’s ultra-slimming Bermuda lake shorts.
A capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to mean boring accessories. Choose simple but bold items in cutting-edge designs to give your holiday wardrobe an edge. We love Prada’s large cat-eye sunglasses, exclusive to Sunglass Hut; Salvatore Ferragamo’s classic sandals in oh-so-now patent blush leather; and Lilly Pulitzer’s metallic crochet clutch, perfect for day-to-night dressing.
A cashmere wrap will be your best friend on the plane and any chilly nights, and can also double as a blanket: try Anthropologie’s heavenly, classic white wrap by White + Warren. Smart packers also know you need a summer hat to keep your cool and protect your face from harmful rays; cream of this season’s crop is J. Crew’s endlessly stylish (and packable!) wide-brim straw hat. Finally, the piece de resistance of artful packing: a large, very stylish cosmetics bag. Kate Spade New York’s ultra-roomy, tropical-patterned cosmetics case is a winner.
It’s a good idea to pack a one-piece and a bikini, so you can mix it up depending on your mood. Norma Kamali’s Shane, available at The Beach House of Naples, hits two of the season’s biggest swimwear trends: asymmetric and cutout; and for fun, colorful days on the beach, try Lenny Niemeyer’s Oasis print bikini, from Everything But Water. Pair both with a healthy slathering of Kiehl’s ultra-lightweight sunscreen: it’s the brand the models swear by. Available from Nordstrom.
